Sustainability by Principle

The meat tray, delivery packaging, school project model, and thermal box. All of them are made from expanded polystyrene plastic, known by the abbreviation EPS or popularly as Styrofoam®. It’s so common to use these products in our daily lives that we rarely stop to think about where they come from and what happens to them when we no longer use them.

Since 2002, Santa Luzia has been committed to recycling plastic waste. The company developed its own technology to replace 98% of wood with recycled EPS, transforming it into new products.

Our journey began with a small mirror factory in 1942, but today, we have become a reference in the decorative profiles, coverings, and eco-friendly accessories segment. Furthermore, we expanded our market and now export nearly 10% of our production to Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, the United States, and Japan.

Recycling is growing rapidly in Brazil and has reached significant proportions. Currently, around 34% of the Styrofoam consumed in our country is recycled, and Santa Luzia Industries is responsible for a significant portion of this percentage. Each year, we recycle about 9,000 tons of polystyrene and have already transformed over 85,000 tons of Styrofoam into products used in construction, projects, and renovations.

These waste materials originate from dozens of companies contributing to the circular economy, as well as waste picker cooperatives that collect post-consumer products like cups, trays, plates, and other rejects. This effort involves 136 cooperatives with more than 2,500 workers in various states of Brazil, including Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Minas Gerais.

In 2021, Santa Luzia fulfilled 16 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and obtained this certification. In fact, we were the first company in Santa Catarina to meet 16 of the SDG fundamentals. This achievement is the result of a focused effort on sustainable principles through actions such as:

  • Reducing the use of wood
  • Implementing a natural resource reuse circuit
  • Using sustainable raw materials
  • Recycling plastic waste
  • Measuring the environmental impacts of our activities

The ODS seal is a certification that demonstrates a company’s commitment to the 2030 agenda and sustainable development. Therefore, it is worth working to meet the criteria and seek partnerships with suppliers who also have this recognition to promote greater sustainability in the world.

Since the beginning of the commercialization of our recycled products, production has increased exponentially, going from 600,000 linear meters in 2004 to 9 million linear meters in 2020. In total, we have produced more than 86 million linear meters of sustainable profiles.

With the capacity to recover over 1,000 tons of waste per month, Santa Luzia has recycled an amount equivalent to 334,000 truckloads of garbage or 652 soccer fields. If the main raw material were still wood, it would be necessary to cut down 336,000 trees to meet manufacturing demands.

With over 80 years of history in the market, Santa Luzia Industries is the only company in Brazil with the capacity to transform large quantities of plastic waste into various product lines, including baseboards, crown moldings, casings, chair rails, coverings, and decks.

Our focus is on producing increasingly eco-friendly products and reinforcing our commitment: sustainability by principle.

Become a Partner of Santa Luzia in EPS Recycling One of Santa Luzia’s current challenges is to expand this network of partners to process growing quantities of EPS waste that harm the environment and transform them into market-valued products.

If you are interested in inviting Santa Luzia to events that promote sustainability and Circular Economy of waste, count on us! We also form partnerships with waste-generating companies, providing information, training, and support.

Recycled polystyrene profiles – Baseboards, crown moldings, and chair rails.

The polystyrene profile with a finish in the form of baseboards, crown moldings, or chair rails is available in various colors, including white, black, gold, silver, copper, gray, wood-like, ocean blue, eucalyptus green, pistachio, red, ivory, and brick-orange. Its raw material is polystyrene, also known as EPS. These polystyrene profiles are part of the Classic Line, which includes chair rails, baseboards, crown moldings, and accessories such as skirting boards and rosettes.

These profiles are sourced from the recycling of Styrofoam® (EPS). After being recycled, 96% of this raw material is used in our profiles. Once these profiles reach the end of their useful life, they can be recycled and turned back into raw material for manufacturing new products. These profiles have some interesting characteristics that set them apart from other products in their category, including: resistance to mold, rot, immunity to pests and termites, resistance to water, and suitability for use in moist environments such as kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms. They are intended for indoor use only, and each bar measures 2.40 linear meters in length.

The recycled polystyrene baseboard, chair rail, and crown molding (Rec. PS profile) are used to cover the joint between the wall surface and the floor or ceiling. They serve various functions, including protecting the wall from kicks and damage from other objects (e.g., shoes, furniture, and vacuum cleaner accessories), abrasion, and for aesthetic reasons as decorative molding.
